Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I was about to do a post on flowers and stuff. BUT, have decided against it. (I typed it halfway through and then clicked delete.) I dont want the girls with their killer high heels and huge bouquets of flowers to come running after me and throwing what nots at me. HEH.
Now now, before you start pointing fingers at me and accuse me of feeling sour just because I dont have a boyfriend at this point in time to shower me with flowers and all other Valentine’s Day peripherals, let me just say that I never insist or rather, have always strongly DISCOURAGED my boyfriends from getting flowers for me during this season. I’d rather he spend it on a nice dinner or make the effort to prepare one for me. Bleah. Not that anyone has ever done it for me before. (Anyone would like to volunteer this year? Teehee.)
But anyway, Valentine’s Day is also friendship day! And it’s a day for all us FREE people *coughs* to come together and say mushy things to each other without feeling embarassed. HAHA! Awwwwww.
The question to ponder today, however is: Who should be the one “initiating” the gestures on Valentine’s Day? The guy or the girl? Personally, I feel that girls EXPECT guys SHOULD be the ones who plans all the stuff and carries out the action - picnics by the beach, restaurant bookings with candlelight 10 course meal and so on and so forth. But is it only because we abide by social rules and allow the men to take the lead?
Watching my friends and their boyfriends, leads me to think about the way I treated my ex-boyfriend(s) previously. It is not uncommon to hear from my girlfriends’ mouths, “Oh Im getting XXX to print my notes for me. You want a copy?” or “XXX helped/is helping me get it.”
Have an emergency need for something? Speed-dial-a-boyfriend and scream bloody murder. He’ll be there.
Oh dont forget the after lecture snack. He’ll definitely be waiting outside your lecture theatre with your favourite tummy-filler before rushing off to his own lecture which might be at the far end of school.
We expect them to be at our beck and call. To worship the ground we walk on. To know what we’re thinking and understand us. But well, men aint no mind readers and they have their own lives to lead too.
It definitely is a *coughs* convenient and attractive *double coughs* accessory to have a boyfriend when you go out to fancy posh places on special occasions. Or when you need a date for a birthday party. Flaunt your latest accessory baby - he’s hawt.
And of course, it’s good to have a man around when you need help with your laptop/PC and any other gadget that has a name like ProMaster Podcast Photoshop version 5.06A (ok, so this shows the lack of a male influence) but I say, girls can do HTML-ing and Java programming too! GIRL POWER!
And when there’s a leaky pipe, there’s always yellow pages and a small probability of getting a really cute plumber who might ask you out on a date. *winks*
I’ve definitely learned to be much more independent, to print my own notes, to get my own food and to plan and organise my things/time. I AM IN CONTROL! Wheeeee!
But behind every pretty face you see on the street, is a little girl waiting to be cuddled and protected from the big bad world, so guys, reassure your girl from time to time that she means the world to you.
And girls, cut your guys some slack and learn to be Miss Independent. There may be a time when you’ll actually need it. *winks*
